Rodrigues Island - The ultimate jigging expedition to the Dogtooth Tunas
In the middle of the Indian Ocean, far away from tourist hotspots and overfished coasts, lies Rodrigues Island – a small volcanic island that has long enjoyed cult status in the jigging world. While fishing pressure is increasing in many parts of the world and fish stocks are dwindling, Rodrigues has remained a truly exceptional spot. Here, untouched nature meets an incredible diversity of species. The region is particularly famous for its capital dogtooth tuna, which are found there in a density and size that is hard to find anywhere else. Those who are prepared to embark on this expedition will experience a fishing adventure in a class of its own – far off the beaten track.

This is how the Rodrigues jigging fishing trip works
The tour begins with the journey via Mauritius. The island is easily accessible via international airports, and after a short domestic flight you are already on Rodrigues. There you will be welcomed by a well-coordinated team that is not only well organized, but also has years of experience in this special area. The first two days of fishing around the island are used to familiarize yourself with the boat, equipment and local conditions. The fishing opportunities are also impressive close to the shore, but the real target lies far out in the open ocean.
After a free day, which can be used either for relaxation or for targeted GT fishing with poppers, the heart of the trip begins: the trip to the legendary Hawkins Banks. This huge underwater plateau, around 140 kilometers long and 20 kilometers wide, is a biologically highly productive area with barely fished structures. At a depth of around 50 meters, a unique habitat awaits passionate jigging anglers – and right in the middle of it all: the doggies. The trip lasts a total of 89 hours, spread over three full fishing days and two nights at sea. You live and fish directly at one of the most spectacular spots in the Indian Ocean, without a daily return trip, without wasting time – concentrated, intense and highly exciting.
The Fishing Boat
The boat used is specially designed for this type of fishing. With a length of 53 feet, two cabins and an experienced crew, it offers not only comfort but also the highest level of technical equipment. Echo sounder, nautical charts and 3D underwater recording enable precise targeting of productive structures. There is room for a maximum of four customers on board – this ensures sufficient space, personal support and focused fishing without crowds. Fishing is continuous during the trip, often alternating between day and night jigging, depending on the current, wind and fish activity.

Fat dogtooth tuna and other fish species
The Dogtooth Tuna always takes center stage. This fish is a real opponent – aggressive, brutally strong, with rapid escapes and enormous destructive potential. If you want to be a match for it, you need the right tackle. A strong PE 8-10 rod, a solid reel with a large line capacity, long-lasting line and well-tuned jigs are not an option, but a prerequisite. The crew will assist with the setup, give tips on guiding style, drift and choice of material and ensure that every participant gets the best possible chance. Even those with less experience are in good hands here – as long as the motivation is right. The tour guides are on hand in advance to provide advice, share tech lists, experience and sources of supply. Close coordination takes place via WhatsApp groups so that no one arrives unprepared.
In addition to the doggies, it is the secondary catches that make the trip so special. Coral trout, GTs, grouper, snapper and amberjacks provide spectacular drills. There are always surprises waiting in the depths, and trolling on the approach can also reward you with wahoo, yellowfin or even marlin. Every day is different, every drift has the potential to make history. Despite the challenging fishing, the focus is on togetherness. The groups are made up of experienced, like-minded anglers who share their knowledge and work together to catch their dream fish. No elbow mentality, no unnecessary competitive pressure – just motivated, respectful cooperation.
After returning from the Hawkins Banks, the tour ends with a night in a hotel on Rodrigues before returning home via Mauritius.

Conclusion on the fishing trip
Rodrigues is more than just a fishing destination. It is a place where you can prove yourself as an angler. If you want to catch doggies, you have to be prepared – mentally, physically and in terms of equipment. But if you’re serious, this is your chance to catch the big one. The trip is not an all-inclusive vacation, but an expedition. It is challenging, but rewarding. And it stays with you.
