Jeffrey's Bay – Surf Fishing

Jeffreys Bay on the east coast of South Africa is one of the best spots in the world for surf fishing. Since more and more people are looking for awesome places to go shark fishing, we went out looking for the perfect spot, and we found just. Jeffreys Bay!

Here’s a unique chance to catch huge sharks right from the beach. Whether you’re into hammerhead sharks, bronze whaler sharks, ragged tooth sharks, gray sharks, or any of the other local shark species, Jeffreys Bay is the place to be for shark fishing! The best time to go is during the absolute high season for large sharks, which is perfect for your fishing vacation.

The area’s got even more to offer. Besides the impressive shark species, you can also catch rays, eagle rays, and other interesting fish species while surf fishing. That makes Jeffreys Bay a great spot for anglers of all experience levels.

Our group trip is all about shark fishing. While you’re here, you’ll be helping out with a local research project by collecting tissue samples and catching data. This info will be used in scientific studies to help preserve biodiversity. And of course, all sharks caught will be carefully released back into the water.

Hey, why not join us on this unique fishing trip to South Africa? You’ll experience the adventure of a lifetime – fishing on one of the most spectacular coastlines in the world!

Your exemplary itinerary

The group trip starts at your home airport. Then, you’ll fly straight to Cape Town or Johannesburg with Lufthansa or Condor. The flight time is about 11 hours, depending on the connection. Then, you’ll hop on a domestic flight to Port Elizabeth, which takes about an hour and a half. Your private transfer will be waiting for you at the airport and will take you to your accommodation in just over an hour.

The modern vacation home is one of the best-rated accommodations in Jeffrey’s Bay. It’s got seven bedrooms with their own bathrooms, and a big living room with a pool table and foosball. The house has modern furniture and is located just fifty meters from the beach — couldn’t be better! So you all have your own single room!

You’ll finish the evening of your arrival with a traditional braai. For the next eight days, you’ll be going surf fishing. Our guides are among the best and have years of experience. Depending on the weather, tide, and other factors, the guides will choose the fishing spots. The fishing area has over 150 km of coastline.

The Fishing

A normal day of fishing starts around 5:30 a.m. with breakfast. Depending on where we’re fishing, we’ll head out by car around 6:30 a.m. We’ll fish until around 3:00 p.m., and a nice lunch on the beach and cold drinks are provided! After you’re done fishing, we’ll take you back to the vacation home.

There are several excellent restaurants and bars right near the vacation home, so you can decide where you want to eat. Just a heads-up, dinner is not included in the price. You should budget about €15-20 per dinner.

There’s also a supermarket in the village where you can stock up on drinks and snacks. The vacation home also has a big garden where you can fire up the barbecue. In South Africa, this is actually just how things are done. So, you can be sure the food will be good!

And since a safari is a must on any trip to Africa, we’ve included this in the price for you. Then, you can decide on site which day you want to go to the park, which is about a 1.5-hour drive away. You’ll be leaving the vacation home in the morning, enjoying the unique wildlife all day, and then being brought back to the vacation home in the late evening.

After nine nights at the vacation home, you’ll be taken back to Port Elizabeth by private transfer and then onward back to Germany. You’ll usually get to your home airport the next day.

Shark Fishing

Jeffrey’s Bay is one of the best places in the world to catch large sharks from the shore. The best part about this fishing trip is that you don’t need to bring any tackle with you. Our local partner provides all the fishing equipment you’ll need.

You’ll usually fish for sharks with special surf rods and large stationary reels. You cast the bait fish or natural bait at specific spots. You can get to these spots in between five and 45 minutes by car, depending on the conditions.

In recent years, this has made fishing so much more effective that it’s pretty common to get three to ten bites on a normal fishing day. You’ve got a pretty good shot at catching a 100-kilogram shark or bigger during a week of fishing!

The bronze whaler sharks are definitely the main attraction. This type of shark is known for its ability to swim quickly and for its aggressive fights. Sharks often take hundreds of meters of line in their first escape and give the angler a hard time during the fight! And of course, all sharks caught are released again!

Other fish species

Besides sharks, you can catch all kinds of other fish. These include various species of ray, cob, garrick, and mussel cracker. The different types of rays really go at it, making for some pretty intense battles. Smaller fish like cob, garrick, and mussel cracker are usually fished with lighter tackle, and they’re a nice change from shark fishing.

Addo Elephant National Park

It’s the third largest national park in South Africa!

Addo Elephant National Park is the third largest national park in South Africa. The park and its marine reserve are home to the Big Seven: lion, elephant, leopard, buffalo, rhino, great white shark, and southern right whale.

The park is about an hour and a half from your place in Jeffrey’s Bay. We’ve got you covered with a private SUV and a local guide. Your guide will pick you up at your vacation home in the morning and then take you through the national park.

Addo is known for its large number of Cape buffalo. There are a lot of elephants in the park of the same name. The same goes for zebras, warthogs, kudu, bushbuck, and other wildlife species. Hippos are only found in the Sundays River in the park.

You’ll also spot big cats and hyenas in the park, but they’re not as common. Lions, leopards, and hyenas are some of the less common animals you’ll see. But, you know, safari is like fishing. You never know what you’ll “catch”!

Helpful tools for your fishing trip!

Sonstiges Angelgerät

It’s a good idea to have a good waterproof boat bag. Zeck Fishing has some great bags. We’d suggest the Tackle Container Pro or the Tackle Container Pro Catfish.

Since you’ll often be fighting fish for several hours at a time, we suggest bringing a pair of good gloves.

Since it can get pretty hot in South Africa, we suggest wearing UV protection shirts, a sun hat, and SPF 50 sunscreen! You can order our expedition UV shirts directly from us!

Good polarized sunglasses are essential for fishing. We recommend glasses from gloryfy unbreakable. The best polarized sunglasses for anglers currently available are also indestructible!

You can take a closer look at the gloryfy unbreakable polarized sunglasses for anglers here: Polarized Sunglasses for Anglers!

This is what you should bring with you on your fishing trip to South Africa!

Binoculars & Clothing

You should definitely bring a good pair of binoculars with you on safari. This’ll let you see and find animals that are farther away.

The weather along the coast can be really different. In November, the average temperature is between 20 and 15 degrees Celsius. On average, there are about five rainy days during this time. So, be sure to bring a good rain jacket and clothes that will keep you warm.

We recommend a waterproof document bag and a waterproof backpack. It can also get wet at the surf, depending on the wind.
