Mexico fishing trip

Roosterfish paradise!

Your trip begins with a flight to Mexico City, either direct or with a stopover, depending on your connection. On arrival, you’ll be transferred to a hotel right next to the airport, where you can round off the day with a good meal and a few cold drinks.

The following day, you’ll head to the airport around midday for your flight to the Pacific coast, which takes just over an hour. On arrival, your private transfer will be waiting to take you to the lodge, approximately an hour and a half away.

Once you’ve checked into your room, shared by two guests, you’ll have time to prepare your tackle for the days ahead. Finish the evening with a traditional meal and a cold beer!

The Fishing

Each of your eight fishing days begins with a wake-up call at 5.30 am. After a hearty breakfast, you’ll head to the harbour at around 6.15 am, where your super pangas will be waiting. Then it’s out onto the Pacific in search of roosterfish, jacks, marlin, sailfish, tuna and dorado! You’ll return to the harbour between 2.00 and 3.00 pm.

As the afternoon approaches, the bites tend to slow down and the wind picks up. That’s why we’ve included eight fishing days in your group trip, giving you plenty of time to make the most of the fishing. The lodge is right on the beach, so you can make a few more casts from the shore afterwards or relax with a cold drink in the lodge’s pool.

Roosterfish are among the Pacific’s most impressive and hard-fighting inshore species. After an extensive search, we’ve found an outstanding destination for targeting them. Our new partner lodge sits on a secluded stretch of Mexico’s coastline, offering exceptional fishing for roosterfish, jacks, sailfish, marlin, tuna and mahi-mahi.

There are no commercial fishing operations or other charter operators in the fishing area, allowing you to explore the inshore and offshore grounds almost undisturbed. Roosterfish are the highlight of this group trip, with miles of sandy beaches supporting a thriving population. On a typical fishing day, you can expect five to eight roosterfish per boat. The lodge’s record stands at an incredible 28 roosterfish caught by a single boat in one day!

The Fishing Options

You’ll fish from traditional Mexican super pangas, each with room for two anglers. These well-powered boats have retractable sun canopies. Your guides are local fishermen who have fished these waters since childhood and know exactly when and where to target each species.

You’ll cast poppers and stickbaits from the bow while additional spinning outfits present baitfish from the stern. This combination gives you the best chance of hooking powerful roosterfish. Jacks, Spanish mackerel and cubera snapper are also found inshore, although cuberas are less common around the sandy beaches where you’ll mainly be fishing.

Alongside the inshore action, the area offers fantastic offshore fishing. The drop-off lies just a few miles from the beach and provides excellent opportunities for sailfish, marlin, tuna and mahi-mahi. You can use conventional trolling techniques, try bait-and-switch fishing with spinning tackle, or cast stickbaits and poppers.

If you’ve always wanted to catch a marlin or sailfish on a spinning rod, this is an excellent place to try. There’s a realistic chance of landing these spectacular billfish on spinning tackle, with plenty of opportunities to put your skills and equipment to the test!

The departure

On your departure day, you’ll have breakfast before transferring to the domestic airport for your flight to Mexico City. Depending on your connection, you’ll either continue directly to Germany or spend another night in Mexico City.

Your fishing boats in Mexico!

The Boats

Four super pangas will be available for your group trip, each with ample engine power for fishing Mexico’s coastal waters.

Mexican Super Pangas!

2 anglers per boat!

All boats have an adjustable sun canopy, two comfortable seats and plenty of room for two anglers to fish from the bow. Live-bait rods are usually set out at the stern.

Fish finders aren’t needed for this style of fishing along sandy beaches and drop-offs. Instead, the guides locate fish by watching for baitfish, birds and currents.

Trolling tackle is available on board, along with rod holders and storage space for your gear.

Tackle Talk

For fishing in Mexico, you’ll need three rod setups. Roosterfish here can grow very large, so we recommend rods rated PE6–8. These fish are incredibly powerful – don’t risk losing a trophy fish by using tackle that’s too light!

For targeting marlin, tuna and sailfish with spinning tackle, bring a rod rated PE8–10. These heavier rods can also be used for inshore fishing with baitfish.

Smaller poppers, stickbaits, plugs and skipping lures are the main choices for inshore fishing.

Popper / Stickbaits

Roosterfish can be caught on a wide variety of lures, but surface fishing offers the most exciting action. Poppers up to 160 mm work well, including the Halco Roosta Popper, FCL Epipop 150, Rapala Xplode 130, Yo-Zuri Mac Popper 130 and Tackle House Feed Popper 150.

Skipping lures worked quickly across the surface are also highly effective. Good options include the GT Icecream, Xorus Asturie 130, Nomad Dartwing 165 and Roberts Ranger 130.

Both sinking and floating stickbaits produce excellent results. We recommend the Tailwalk GUNZ 160 S & F, Hybrida J1 Tropic, Sakura Mr. Joe 120S, Rapala Longcast Stickbaits, Sebile Magic Swimmer and Samson Lures Tweak Baits.

Bring a good selection of natural colours, including blue/silver, bonito patterns and blue/white. Roosterfish also respond well to pink, so include lures with prominent pink markings or an all-pink finish.

The best lines and leaders for Mexico!

Leader & Main Line

For inshore lure fishing, use leaders rated at 80–175 lb. For offshore fishing, you’ll need 175–220 lb leaders, while 70–100 lb fluorocarbon is recommended for live-bait fishing.

Choose high-quality leader material from brands such as Fishermen, Varivas, Nomad or Climax.

Your main line should be a high-performance PE braid. For roosterfish, use at least PE6 (65 lb). For targeting marlin, sailfish and tuna offshore, use a minimum of PE8 (80 lb).

Good options include Gosen Diver X8, Daiwa J-Braid X8, JB Line One and other high-performance braids.

Terminal Tackle

Hooks & Terminal Tackle

There’s no room for compromise when it comes to lure hooks. Please bring only BKK GT-Rex hooks in a range of sizes to suit your lures.

Split rings and solid rings should also be matched to your lure size. Owner solid rings in sizes #6–#9 and Owner Super Heavy Duty split rings in sizes #8–#11 are good choices.

For bait-and-switch fishing, use circle hooks such as Gamakatsu Octopus Circle hooks in sizes 6/0–8/0. For marlin, we recommend Mustad Demon Perfect Circle hooks in sizes 10/0–12/0.

Helpful tools for your fishing trip!

Other Fishing Equipment

We recommend bringing a good pair of split-ring pliers. The hPa Game Plier is a reliable choice, allowing you to open even heavy-duty split rings with ease.

A waterproof boat bag is also worth bringing. Zeck Fishing offers some excellent options, including the Tackle Container Pro and Tackle Container Pro Catfish.

As you’ll often be casting for several hours at a time, we recommend packing a good pair of gloves.

Mexico can get very hot, so bring UV-protective shirts, a sun hat and SPF 50 sunscreen. Our Expeditions UV shirts are available to order directly from us.

Good polarised sunglasses are essential for fishing. We recommend gloryfy unbreakable sunglasses, which combine polarised lenses with exceptionally durable frames.
