Mexico fishing trip

Roosterfish paradise!

Your trip starts with the flight to Mexico City. You can fly directly or with a stopover to Mexico City, depending on the flight connection. When you arrive in Mexico City, you will be taken to a 5* hotel that is right next to the airport. You can end the day with a nice meal and some cold drinks.

The next day, we go to the local airport around midday. From there, it takes just over an hour to fly to the Pacific Coast. On arrival, a private transfer will be waiting for you to take you to the lodge. The drive to the lodge takes about 1.5 hours. When you get to the lodge, you will check-in into your rooms. Two people share a room. Then, it’s time to get the tackle ready for the next few days of fishing. You will finish the evening with a traditional meal and a cold beer!

The Fishing

The next eight days of fishing start with the wake-up call at 5:30 a.m. After a sumptuous breakfast, you will drive to the harbor at around 06:15 a.m., where your super pangas are already waiting for you. Then it’s off to the Pacific Ocean and hunt for Rooster, Jacks, Marlin, Sailfish, Tuna and Dorados! Between 14:00-15:00 you will return to the port.

Towards the afternoon, the bite slows down and the wind increases. That’s why we have planned eight fishing days for your group trip. This gives you enough time to go fishing during your trip. The lodge is located directly on the beach and if you want, you can make a few more casts from the shore. Or you can relax with cold drinks in the lodge’s own pool!

The Roosterfish is one of the most impressive and combative inshore fish species in the Pacific. After a long search, we were able to find a real hot spot for Roosterfish for you! Our new partner lodge is located on a lonely coastal strip of Mexico and offers you a unique fishing experience for Rooster, Jacks, Sailfish, Marlin, Tuna and Mahi Mahi!

There are no commercial fishing or other charter operators in your fishing area. This allows you to fish almost undisturbed inshore and offshore. The highlight of this group tour is fishing for Roosterfish. The miles of sandy beaches have an enormous stock of Roosterfish. On a normal fishing day, you can expect 5-8 roosters per boat. The best fishing day in lodge history brought in 28 roosters in one day and boat!

The Fishing Options

Fishing in Mexico uses traditional super pangas. The local boats offer space for two anglers. The boats are sufficiently motorized and have a retractable awning. Your guides are all local fishermen who have been fishing these waters since childhood. So, you know exactly when and where the best chances of catching the target fish species are.

When fishing, you cast poppers and stickbaits from the bow, while additional spinning rods with bait fish are offered from the stern of the boat. This gives you the best chance of catching the strong Roosters. Inshore there are also Jacks, Spanish Mackerel and Cuberas. However, the latter are not so common, as you primarily fish the sandy beaches.

In addition to in-shore fishing, our area offers fantastic off-shore fishing. The drop-off is just a few miles from the beach and offers great fishing for sailfish, marlin, tuna and mahi mahi. Here you can either troll traditionally or fish with the Bait & Switch spinning rods or with stickbaits and poppers. If you want to catch a marlin or sailfish with a spinning rod, this is the place to be! Here there are realistic chances to catch the swordtails with spinning rods! So, you can see that the area offers many opportunities to really let off steam!

The departure

On the day of departure, after breakfast, you will return to the domestic airport and then continue to Mexico City. Depending on the flight connection, you will fly directly to Germany or spend another night in Mexico City.

Your fishing boats in Mexico!

The Boats

Four super pangas will be available for your group trip. These have sufficient engine power for fishing in Mexico.

Mexican Super Pangas!

2 anglers per boat!

All boats have a modular awning, two comfortable seats, and ample space for two anglers to fish from the bow. Live-bait rods are usually set out in the stern of the boat.

Fish finders are not required for fishing in Mexico. Fishing takes place along the sandy beaches and drop-off points. Guides search for fish using bait, birds, and currents.

Trolling equipment is available on the boats. Rod holders and storage for your tackle are also provided.

Tackle Talk

For Mexico you need three rod setups. Since the Rooster can grow very large in Mexico, it is better to fish with PE 6-8 rods. The Roosters are extremely strong and losing a big fish to too light tackle makes no sense!

For jacks and smaller fish species, you can fish with lighter rods of PE 4-6. If you want to fish for marlin, tuna and sailfish with a spinning rod, you should have a PE 8-10 with you.

Smaller poppers, stick baits, wobblers and skip baits are mainly used as lures for inshore fishing!

You need these fishing baits in Mexico!

Popper / Stickbaits

Roosterfish can be caught with many different baits. The most exciting thing is surface fishing. Poppers up to 160mm are used here. Poppers like Halco Roosta Popper, FCL Epipop 150, Rapala Xplode 130, Yozui Mac Popper130 or Tackle House Feed Popper 150 are very good.

Skipbaits are also very catchy. All skipbaits that can be quickly guided on the surface work here (GT Icecream, Xorus Asturie 130, Nomad Dartwing 165, Roberts Ranger Lures 130).

Stickbaits also catch very well. Here you can fish sinking and floating variants. We can recommend the Tailwalk GUNZ 160 S&F, Hybrida J1 Tropic, Sakura Mr. Joe 120S, Rapalla Longcast Stickbaits, Sebile Magic Swimmer, Samson Lures Tweak Baits).

As colors you should have a good selection of natural colors (blue/silver, bonito, blue/white). Roosterfish also love pink baits. So make sure that your lures have a good pink content or are completely pink.

The best lines and leaders for Mexico!

Leader & Main Line

For Inshoore spin fishing, leaders between 40-120lbs are used. For offshore fishing, you need leaders of 175-220lbs. For live bait fishing, you should use 40-60lbs of fluorocarbon!

Here you should make sure that these are quality leaders such as those from Fishermen, Varivas, Nomad or Climax.

The main lines should be high performance PE lines. A PE6 (65lbs load capacity) is the minimum for fishing for Roosterfish.

For offshore fishing for marlin, sail and tuna you need at least one PE8 (80lbs lifting capacity).

For fishing for jacks, lines range from 40-60lbs. Good lines are e.g. Gosen Diver x8, Daiwa J-Braid x8, JB Line One or other high-performance lines!

Terminal Tackle

Hooks & Terminal Tackle

No compromises can be made here. Please only bring hooks of the BKK brand. Here you should bring the GT-Rex hooks in different sizes!  The hooks should be adapted to the lure sizes!

Split and solid rings should also be adapted to the lure size. Owner Super-Heavy-Duty Split Rings (Solidrings #6 – #9) (Snap Rings #8 – #11) are a good choice here.

As bait & switch hooks you should use circle hooks such as those from Gamakatsu Octopus in 6/0 – 8/0 as well as for Marlin Mustad Demon Perfect Circle Hook 10/0 – 12/0.

Helpful tools for your fishing trip!

Other Fishing Equipment

In general, it is advisable to bring good split ring pliers. Here we can recommend the hPa Game Plier split ring pliers. This allows you to open super strong split rings without any problems.

A good, waterproof boat bag is also recommended. The company Zeck Fishing has a few good bags on offer. We recommend the Tackle Container Pro or the Tackle Container Pro Catfish!

Since you are often throwing for several hours at a time, we recommend that you bring a pair of good gloves with you.

Since it can get very warm in Mexico, we recommend UV protection shirts, a sun hat and LF50 sunscreen! You can order our Expeditions UV shirts directly from us!

Good polarized sunglasses are essential for fishing. We recommend glasses from gloryfy unbreakable. The best polarized sunglasses for anglers currently available are also indestructible!

You can take a closer look at the gloryfy unbreakable polarized sunglasses for anglers here: Polarized Sunglasses for Anglers!
