Bluefin tuna fishing in Morocco using poppers and stickbaits

On this bluefin tuna fishing trip in Morocco, you’ll be targeting trophy-sized bluefin tuna using poppers and stickbaits. Popping for tuna is heavily dependent on the tides. That’s why your fishing days are always tailored to the current tide.

Our experienced local captain knows exactly when and under what conditions the bluefin tuna are active. The schedule for each day’s fishing is therefore planned individually on a daily basis. The bluefin season in Morocco is relatively short. The best months for a successful bluefin tuna charter are May to July, as well as September and October.

What is a typical day’s bluefin tuna fishing like?

Depending on the tide, the fishing day begins either early in the morning or not until late morning. This means you’ll be fishing with poppers and stickbaits exclusively during the prime feeding times. As popping for tuna is physically demanding, it makes sense to fish only under optimal conditions.

Bluefin tuna fishing in Morocco is usually carried out using a technique known as ‘blind casting’. This means that you cast your poppers and stickbaits specifically at current edges and rugged underwater structures. Bluefin tuna in Morocco rarely come right up to the surface or form large baitballs. Although birds occasionally give away the position of the tuna, such situations are rather rare.

Our captain has been fishing for bluefin tuna in Morocco for many years and knows the fish’s habits inside out. Days with four to six bluefins landed are therefore not uncommon. The best fishing day to date even yielded 14 bluefins caught and successfully released. Last season alone, more than 150 bluefin tuna were caught and carefully released.

The fishing day usually ends after eight to ten hours – depending on the fish’s activity and the anglers’ stamina. As the hotel is situated right next to the marina, you can conveniently leave your fishing gear on the boat. You can then round off the evening with a good meal. There are various restaurants near the hotel or the hotel’s own restaurant to choose from. The trip includes accommodation with breakfast, so you remain flexible when it comes to dinner.

Chances of catching giant bluefin tuna in Morocco

The average size of bluefin tuna expected in Morocco ranges from 50 to 150 kilograms. However, every year, genuine monster fish weighing over 200 kilograms are caught. Anyone fishing for bluefin tuna in Morocco should be aware that patience and perseverance are crucial. It often takes some time to locate active fish.

That’s why, when it comes to tuna fishing, the motto is: cast, cast and cast again! The bites often come completely out of the blue and demand the angler’s full concentration. Particularly large bluefin tuna will not forgive any mistakes during the fight.

Return journey

On the day of departure, after an early breakfast, you will leave the hotel and head for the airport. The journey takes about 30 minutes. After checking in, you will board your return flight to your home airport.

You'll need this fishing tackle for bluefin tuna fishing!

Tackle Talk

Due to the enormous size of the fish, only heavy big-game tackle is used. When fishing for bluefin tuna, you shouldn’t even think of using a rod rated below PE10. It’s best to take rods rated PE10–12! The setup is combined with a Stella or Saltiga reel (size 18,000 or larger) and 80–120 lb braided main line.

Popper / Stickbaits

Poppers with smaller heads, between 150 and 200 mm, are particularly suitable as lures. It is important to use a lure that is heavy enough to be cast far enough. Poppers weighing between 100 and 140 g are best! Good tuna poppers include the Halco Haymaker, FLC Epipop and Yozuri Mac Popper. The Souls Air Matic 205 120g has already caught tuna weighing over 200kg in the field.

Heavy stickbaits measuring between 150 and 200 mm and weighing 100–140g are also used. When spin fishing for tuna in particular, casting distance is often the deciding factor in success. The Tacklehouse Britt or Flitz are good tuna lures. The HOWK Tunastick 150 is also well suited, as is the Souls Hibiki 175 95. Slightly cheaper stickbaits such as the Tailwalk GUNZ can also work.

The best lines and leaders for bluefin tuna!

Leader & main line

For spin fishing for bluefin tuna, you’ll need at least a PE10 line (100lb breaking strain).

For leaders, we recommend at least a 220lb shock leader from Varivas or Fisherman.

As you always have to expect to catch huge bluefin tuna, it’s best to go for a slightly heavier line here.

Many bluefin tuna have been lost in the past due to leader breakage or line snap!

Terminal Tackle

Hooks, split rings and snap rings

There can be no compromises here. Please bring only BKK hooks. You should bring GT-Rex hooks in various sizes! The hooks should be matched to the size of the lures!

Snap rings and solid rings should also be matched to the bait size. Owner Super-Heavy-Duty snap rings and solid rings (solid rings #6–#9) (snap rings #8–#11) are a good choice here.

Useful tools for your fishing trip

Other fishing tackle

In general, it’s a good idea to bring a decent pair of snap-ring pliers. We can recommend the hPa Game Plier. With these, you’ll have no trouble opening even the strongest snap rings.

A good, waterproof tackle bag is also recommended. Zeck Fishing has a few excellent bags on offer. We recommend the Tackle Container Pro or the Tackle Container Pro Catfish!

As you’ll often be popping for several hours at a time, we recommend bringing a pair of good gloves.

As it can get warm in Morocco, we recommend UV-protective shirts, a sun hat and SPF 50 sun cream! You can order our expedition UV shirts directly from us!

A good pair of polarised sunglasses is essential for fishing. We recommend sunglasses from the Gloryfy brand. The best polarised sunglasses for anglers currently available are also virtually indestructible!

You can take a closer look at Gloryfy polarised sunglasses for anglers here: Polarised sunglasses for anglers!
