Oman Yellowfin Tuna Fishing

Yellowfin tuna popping in Muscat!

Muscat Yellowfin Tuna Paradise! There are few fishing destinations that offer such consistent tuna fishing as Muscat in Oman. Due to increased demand for dedicated tuna fishing trips, we have found a new partner in Muscat, Oman. Our local partner has been a reliable source of tuna fishing with poppers and stickbaits for years and boasts some of the best fishing boats in the area! Compared to southern Oman, Muscat offers good weather conditions year-round and is less prone to wind than, for example, Salalah or Hallaniyat. Strong winds and rough seas can easily lead to lost fishing days in those regions. In Muscat, the chances of this are very slim. That’s why we deliberately chose this corner of Oman!

Itinerary - Oman Tuna Fishing Trip

Your group trip begins at your home airport. From there, you’ll fly to Muscat, one of Oman’s trendiest cities! You’ll arrive in Muscat early in the morning and be met at the airport by our partner. The transfer to your hotel and the starting point of your fishing trip in Oman takes approximately 1.5 hours.

Top hotel right on the harbor!

As with all our fishing trips, this yellowfin tuna fishing trip in Oman also offers you top-notch accommodation! We’ve deliberately chosen one of the best hotels right on the marina for you. After arriving at the hotel, you’ll check into your room, each equipped with two single beds. You’ll then have the entire rest of the day to prepare your fishing gear for tuna fishing in Oman, enjoy some cold drinks, or cool off in the hotel pool.

This is what a typical fishing day in Oman looks like

A typical fishing day begins early in the morning after a hearty breakfast at the hotel. From there, you’ll walk directly to the marina where your high-end boats will be waiting for you. The 40-foot center console boats are equipped with all the latest technology, including long-range radar for locating dolphins and flocks of birds. The radar has a range of up to 40 km! This is essential for successful tuna fishing in Muscat, Oman. Our guides also have a network of contacts with other boats and are therefore always informed about the latest positions of the tuna schools.

After leaving the marina, the boats are put to good use. With 800-900 hp, they are powerful enough to cover even long distances quickly. Since the tuna need to be located, the first fishing session can begin within minutes or last for one to two hours.

All our boats are connected to each other via radio and satellite phone. Generally, the boats will start the fishing day heading in different directions. This gives you the best chance of finding the tuna early. As soon as a school is located, the other boats will be notified!

So you’ll be out at sea all day, actively searching for tuna. Around mid-afternoon, you’ll return to the marina and can spend the rest of the day relaxing by the pool or in one of the five restaurants.

Muscat Yellowfin Tuna Fishing Methods

Muscat is known for offering excellent surface fishing for yellowfin tuna using poppers and stickbaits. Therefore, the primary focus of this group trip is fishing for yellowfin tuna with poppers and stickbaits. Popper rods in the PE10-12 weight range are recommended. For reels, you should have at least a 14k, or preferably an 18k Stella or Saltiga.

Using radar, the guides will be on the lookout for flocks of birds and dolphins. As soon as they are located, it’s time to get moving. Then, at top speed, they’ll head towards the dolphin and bird schools. Often, the tuna swim alongside the dolphins. In this case, the goal is to position yourself in front of the school and cast poppers and stickbaits towards the dolphins.

You’ll also frequently encounter so-called “feeding fransies,” where the tuna push the baitfish to the surface and then attack from all sides. Such a feeding frany often results in hours of fighting the fish and landing large tuna!

Those who prefer a more relaxed approach can also try baitfish fishing from time to time. However, this type of fishing is not a priority and must be coordinated with all other anglers!

Return journey

On your departure day, after an early breakfast, you’ll leave the hotel for Muscat. The drive takes approximately 1.5 hours. Upon arrival at the airport, you’ll check in and then fly back to your home airport. You’ll usually arrive there in the late evening.

Tackle Talk

Due to the enormous size of the fish, only heavy big-game tackle is used. No one should start bluefin tuna fishing with anything less than a PE10 popper rod. Ideally, you should bring PE10-12 rods! This setup is combined with a Stella or Saltiga reel, size 18,000 or larger, and 80-120 lb braided main line.

These are the fishing lures you need in Oman!

Popper / Stickbaits

Poppers with smaller heads, between 150 and 200 mm, are particularly suitable as lures. Sufficient weight is crucial to ensure the lures can be cast far enough. Poppers weighing between 100 and 140 g are ideal! Good tuna poppers include the Halco Haymaker, FLC Epipop, and Yozuri Mac Popper. The Souls Air Matic 205 (120 g) has even been used to catch tuna weighing over 200 kg.

Heavier stickbaits, between 150 and 200 mm in length and weighing 100-140 g, are also effective. Especially when spin fishing for tuna, casting distance often determines success. The Tacklehouse Britt and Flitz are excellent tuna lures. The HOWK Tunastick 150 is also well suited, as is the Souls Hibiki 175 95. Slightly cheaper stickbaits like the Tailwalk GUNZ can also work.

The best lines and leaders for tuna!

Leader & Mainline

For spin fishing for yellowfin tuna, you’ll need at least PE10 line (100 lbs breaking strain).

For leaders, we recommend at least 190-220 lb shock leaders from Varivas or Fisherman.

Since you should always expect to catch large yellowfin tuna, it’s advisable to go a size heavier.

For your main line, you can use 80 lb line. This allows for longer casts and is generally sufficient in terms of breaking strain.

Terminal Tackle

Hooks, split rings and split rings

No compromises are allowed here. Please bring only BKK brand hooks. You should bring GT-Rex hooks in various sizes! The hooks should be matched to the lure size!

Split and solid rings should also be matched to the lure size. Owner Super-Heavy-Duty split and solid rings (solid rings #6 – #9) (split rings #8 – #11) are a good choice.

Helpful tools for your fishing trip

Other fishing tackle

Generally, it’s advisable to bring a good pair of split ring pliers. We recommend the hPa Game Plier split ring pliers. With these, you can easily open even super-strong split rings.

A good, waterproof boat bag is also recommended. Zeck Fishing offers some excellent bags. We recommend the Tackle Container Pro or the Tackle Container Pro Catfish!

Since you’ll often be popping for several hours at a time, we recommend bringing a pair of good gloves.

As it can get warm in Oman, we recommend UV-protective shirts, a sun hat, and SPF 50 sunscreen! You can order our expedition UV shirts directly from us!

Good polarized sunglasses are essential for fishing. We recommend Gloryfy sunglasses. The best polarized sunglasses currently available for anglers are also virtually indestructible!

You can take a closer look at Gloryfy polarized sunglasses for anglers here: Polarized Sunglasses for fishermen!
